Due to its proximity to the equator, Peru experiences a tropical or subtropical climate, which means the temperature remains warmer to hot throughout the year with slight season differences.

Snowfall is rare in the low-lying areas of the country like Lima – the capital of Peru, Trujillo, Piura, Chiclayo, etc. These lowland cities receive small or no snowfall during winter. 

Contrary to lowland areas, the higher elevated regions receive snowfall due to higher elevation. The Highland regions or Andean regions receive excessive snow on their high peaks. Cities including Cusco, Huaraz, Arequipa, and Puno are located at higher altitudes, which causes great diversity in the country’s geography.

Huascaran National Park

Huascaran National Park is home to Peru’s highest Mountain peak elevated at 22025 feet above sea level. It covers the huge land which encompasses enormous mountain peaks.

Visitors can see the snow-covered peaks on this land. The Huascaran National Park is home to various glaciers and several beautiful places to catch the attention of visitors. 

Cordillera Blanca

Cordillera Blanca is the exact location stated above; Cordillera Blanca is located in the Ancash region. It is also known as the White Mountains. What makes it renowned as a white mountain? The only reason is that its peaks always remain covered with white snowflakes. Some of its known peaks are Huascarán, Huandoy, and Alpamayo.


Ausangate is located in the Cusco region. The Austangate is the mountain peak in the Andes region. The Andes range passes Peru from the centre of the country.  This mountain peak is also considered one of the highest peaks of the Andes. It would be interesting to know; this is also known as the “Father of Mountains.” The Inca civilization people believe that this mountain protects its people and surrounding places. 


Salkantay is located in the Cusco region. It is in the Vilcabamba Mountain Range. Salkantay is a prominent mountain peak in the Cusco region. It has a 6000 m elevation. Snow is shared here. You will see snow-capped peaks throughout the peak. Visitors consider this Salkantay Mountain Peak an alternative but little easy trek of  Machu Picchu. 


Huaraz is located in the Ancash region and offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains. People enjoy mountaineering, snowboarding, and other snow activities. Huaraz is the capital of the Ancash region, and it comes along the Cordillera Blanca mountain peaks.

The proximity to the equator and the country’s existence in the tropics generally lead to warmer temperatures. Snowfall in Peru is limited to highland areas, which are confined to winter months. 

It is not always a cold temperature in Peru. Instead, due to tropical or subtropical climates, Peru remains warm throughout the year. However the situation of the environment varies as per the geography. The coastal and low-land areas remain warmer throughout the year than highland areas. 

Snow in high-land or high-altitude areas can be seen in the Winter months, from December to March. However, it is essential to note that all higher elevated regions do not welcome snowfall; instead, Andean highlands receive more snowfall. 

The weather remains dry during the summer, which lasts from May to September. The cooler temperatures during the day and colder temperatures at night, but it stays warmer compared to highland temperatures.

Skiing in Peru has yet to be applicable. There are no skiing resorts, nor do they offer any snow activities. There are snow-covered peaks. There are glaciers and challenging landscapes. Snow peaks are an enjoyable resource for visitors.
